Police in the UK had to take drastic action after an electrical fault left a driver unable to brake on a
Motorway.
An emergency call was received from a driver claiming to have been kidnapped by his car. The
unfortunate driver was at the wheel of a Jaguar I-Pace travelling on the M58 in the UK’s Greater
Manchester area. According to the Police report the driver told them that the car would not brake,
and, he had in effect been kidnapped!
Mobile Patrols then swarmed the Motorway system in the area to save the driver and used specialist
tactics to ram the vehicle and block it in between a number of vehicles bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Fortunately for the run-away driver Police were able to locate the driver quickly and managed to box
him in but not until the driver had gone from the M58 to the M57 and finally on to the M62 some 25
minutes later where the car stopped near Ecclestone, where ever that is.
The Police said that they were able to work together to halt traffic and bring the car to a halt without
injuring anyone, and without too much damage to the runaway car or their own Police Cruisers.
Jaguar Land Rover are currently investigating the matter with “urgency” but as of yet have not come
up with a reason for the failed brakes. A spokesperson did say “A full review is underway to
determine the cause of the incident, which is still to be established” and then added “the safety of
our clients and vehicles is JLR’s highest priority”.
Well, I feel so much safer now. Only trouble is this isn’t the only time that this has happened and the
fact that the Police have already developed specialist tactics to counter this problem tells us that it
may be a regular feature in the future.
