The New Isuzu D-Max 2.2 Is Already Making Waves in Malaysia

Automologist Atherton checks out the latest updates surrounding the Isuzu D-Max, and one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the new 2.2-litre variant is not just another engine option. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular choices in the D-Max line-up.

Isuzu Malaysia launched its new 2026 D-Max range on 31 March 2026, bringing a major change under the bonnet with the introduction of a new 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The new powerplant replaces the outgoing 1.9-litre diesel and is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission on selected variants.

And Malaysians appear to be taking a liking to it.

According to Isuzu Malaysia, the new D-Max range now consists of 10 variants, covering both Single Cab and Double Cab configurations. The new 2.2-litre engine has quickly become the engine of choice for many buyers, with Isuzu highlighting improvements in refinement, response, fuel efficiency and emissions compliance.

The new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel produces 163 PS and 400 Nm, with the engine displacing 2,164cc. It is Euro 5-compliant and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission on the new automatic variants.

But here’s where things get interesting.

The 2.2-litre Single Cab Auto has become a genuine surprise hit. Isuzu Malaysia says it now accounts for 60% of total D-Max Single Cab sales, making it the first automatic Single Cab pick-up offered by the brand in Malaysia.

For people who use a pickup as an actual workhorse, that makes plenty of sense. You still get the 4×4 capability and load-carrying practicality of a Single Cab, but without having to constantly play footsie with a clutch pedal in Malaysian traffic.

And then there is the overall sales champion.

The 2.2-litre Standard 4×4 Auto currently sits at the top of the D-Max sales chart, accounting for 36% of total D-Max sales. That’s a pretty strong indication that buyers are increasingly looking at the smaller 2.2-litre engine as the sweet spot between performance, practicality and running costs.

So, how much does the new D-Max cost?

According to Isuzu Malaysia’s current official pricing, the recommended on-the-road prices without insurance for Peninsular Malaysia start from:

  • 2.2L 4×4 Single Cab MT – RM103,121.20
  • 2.2L 4×4 Single Cab AT – RM109,121.20
  • 3.0L 4×4 Single Cab MT – RM108,888.40
  • 2.2L 4×4 Standard MT – RM114,271.20
  • 2.2L 4×2 Auto Plus AT – RM114,671.20
  • 2.2L 4×4 Standard AT – RM122,171.20
  • 2.2L 4×4 Premium AT – RM141,821.20
  • 3.0L 4×4 Premium AT – RM145,138.40
  • 3.0L 4×4 X-Terrain AT – RM162,938.40

These are the current recommended OTR prices listed by Isuzu Malaysia and exclude insurance.

One interesting detail here: although Isuzu says the 2026 range has 10 variants, the current online model listing displays nine combinations. So if you’re heading to a showroom, it is worth checking directly with the dealer for the latest availability and the specific variant configuration.

Either way, the message from the market is pretty obvious.

The new 2.2-litre D-Max isn’t simply filling the gap left by the old 1.9-litre engine. With 60% of Single Cab sales going to the new automatic version and the 2.2 Standard 4×4 Auto taking 36% of overall D-Max sales, Isuzu appears to have found a rather convincing formula for Malaysian pickup buyers.

The D-Max has always been about getting the job done. Now, apparently, Malaysians want to get the job done without working the clutch quite so hard either.
