AWAS Cameras to Play “Point-to-Point Detective” on Speeding Drivers – KL-Karak Highway  & the Menora Tunnel First

In what feels like a page out of a James Bond spy thriller, the new system will use the point-to-point method, where it calculates the time you take to travel from, say, Point A to Point B. If you’re there faster than you should be (I feel sorry for my petrol head buddies), congratulations, you’ve earned yourself a speeding ticket.

“The current system is like having a teacher who only checks if you’re sitting quietly at your desk for a second,” Loke said (well, maybe he didn’t say that exactly, but you get the drift). “We want drivers to behave like angels not just in front of the camera, but all the way between cameras.”

To start, these souped up speed snitches will debut in high-risk areas like the KL-Karak Expressway and Menora Tunnel, where drivers tend to hit warp speed while going downhill. Loke pointed out that the current cameras are as effective as posting a guard dog that only barks when you’re standing right in front of it. Once you’re past, zoom-zoom behaviour resumes.

Point-to-point cameras aren’t a new invention, though. They’re already hard at work in places like Australia and the UK, keeping highways and school zones in check. But in Malaysia ? It’s time to see if our “slow-fast-slow” driving culture can handle this new reality or if we’ll all just have to start scheduling road trips with extra time for actual cruising.

So, folks, the next time you’re tempted to channel your inner F1 driver, especially soon the “balik Kampung” chaos starts, remember, AWAS is watching. Not just here, but there too. And everywhere in between.
