Classic Wheels and the Spirit of Merdeka

There is a certain poetry in the way a classic car greets its admirers. A cough of the carburettor, the smell of aged leather, the sunlight glinting across polished chrome, these are not merely sensory pleasures, but reminders of a time when motoring was an art form, not just a means to an end. This past weekend, the Royal Ipoh Club played host to such poetry in motion, as more than sixty vintage and classic automobiles rolled gracefully into the Merdeka Gala Classic Gathering.

It was a meeting that blended the pride of Malaysia’s independence with the timeless romance of motoring heritage, the sort of event where every bonnet concealed not just an engine, but a story.

Jointly organised by the venerable Royal Ipoh Club and the spirited Perak Classic Drivers (PCD), the gathering drew enthusiasts from near and far, from Ipoh’s leafy lanes to the bustle of Kuala Lumpur. Founded in 2018, PCD now counts more than 160 members, not a club in the ordinary sense, but rather a fellowship of kindred souls who swap automotive wisdom, share spare parts, and guide one another through the curious bureaucracy of vintage road tax exemptions.

One could almost hear the words of its members echoing through the colonnades, “Classic cars are more than mere vehicles. They are storytellers, custodians of craft and memory, deserving protection for generations yet unborn.”

The proceedings were graced by Mr. JP Hari Krishnan, President of the Royal Ipoh Club, who welcomed participants warmly and praised the collaboration with PCD as a way of honouring heritage while knitting communities closer together. Presiding over the day with gusto was Ipoh’s own celebrated Master of Ceremonies, KT Pillai, a man who could make even a timing belt sound like an object of romance. With his lively commentary and irrepressible humour, he ensured there was never a lull in the day’s festivities.

Tied to the 68th anniversary of Merdeka, the event highlighted three irresistible reasons to restore a classic car, preserving history, as these machines are rolling museums with every nut and bolt telling a chapter in the great motoring narrative, investment value, since for the astute they can appreciate faster than many artworks or stock portfolios and the sheer pride of ownership, found in the joy of coaxing an engine back to life, receiving admiring glances at a traffic light, and knowing that one commands not merely a vehicle, but a lasting legacy. Legends Under the Sun

The parade of machinery was nothing short of splendid. Austins, Mercedes-Benzes, BMWs, Fiats, Porsches, Volkswagens, Toyota, Hondas, and Alfa Romeos, each meticulously restored, each glistening beneath the Ipoh sun. For many onlookers, they were memory machines, evoking roads once ruled by these icons of engineering, decades ago when motoring was still a gentleman’s pursuit.

Beyond the polished bonnets and lacquered wood dashboards, there was fellowship aplenty. Speeches, quizzes, lucky draws, souvenirs, and the requisite group photograph gave the day its shape. Meanwhile, the Royal Ipoh Club ensured no enthusiast was left running on empty, with a hearty breakfast and lunch to fuel both stories and laughter.

X-1R Global, The event’s main sponsor took centre stage to present its suite of scientifically proven additives with liquid engineering to ensure that even the oldest engines can run with the vigour of their youth. Literally it is like the elixir of youth for the classic rides.

For over thirty years, X-1R has been an official partner of NASA, its technology entrusted to perform in the most unforgiving vehicle known to man, the 3000 ton shuttle crawler. In fact, X-1R has been inducted into the NASA Hall of Fame, a recognition reserved for technologies that have not only served in the space programme but also delivered benefits to consumers all over the world.

To motorsport teams, X-1R is a trusted companion in the pursuit of speed and reliability. To NASA, it is the quiet hero that ensures their crawler and their ground vehicles continue to function where failure is simply not an option. And to the classic car enthusiast, it is the modern alchemy that keeps vintage pistons pumping, fuel systems clean, and combustion as smooth as the day these machines first rolled off their production lines. As one PCD member quipped with a smile: “If it’s good enough for NASA, it’s certainly good enough for my Alfa Romeo.”

What sets PCD apart is its spirit of inclusivity. No fees, no barriers, only the love of classic cars required. Men and women alike are welcome, and their convoys, often with ceremonial police escorts, have become a familiar sight across Malaysia, from Taiping to the Cameron Highlands.

As the engines roared and vintage horns parped their cheerful notes across Ipoh, the Classic Cars Merdeka Gathering reminded all present, these cars are not relics. They are living legacies, carrying with them the pride of ownership, the joy of community, and the enduring spirit of Merdeka itself.
