I recently came across a brilliant piece of Pathé News from the 1960’s that proudly announces the arrival of electric cars. You have to be British and my sort of age to be able to remember Pathé News, but these were short news clips aired in cinemas before the TV had become a ubiquitous staple of our homes.
Latest news from India is that we are to expect no more news on self-driving cars from that part of the world. Automologist MAC who once frequented India (for what purpose, ask him yourself) brings us the last update on this matter…at least for the foreseeable future.
It won’t be any time soon, but the death knell has been sounded for combustion-powered cars across the UK. The UK government is wrestling with pollution in the towns and congestion on the roads with a new pollution tax that will ultimately herald the end of the traditional car.
Modern cars are much quicker and reliable, and handle a hell of a lot better; they are very economical, safer, cheaper to maintain and far more comfortable. Despite all of these, the more painful to own, the better. Classic cars not only still exist, but are positively thriving. Many are being killed by rust yet their value continues to increase rapidly.

Americans have had a love-love relationship with the amount of horsepower they can squeeze into a car, and to tell you the truth, I have always had more than just a passing fascination with the American Muscle Car, as they are generally known. Over the years, there has been a few attempts to rein the manufacturers in, but the recent crop of muscle cars coming out of the States seems to have upped the ante – we say “long live the horsepower war”.
