This is the question being asked across many industries. According to studies by the Malaysian government – it is sufficient for the majority of Malaysians. Through a study, between October 2025 till May 2026 during the period when the cap was first introduced, nearly 90% of drivers in Malaysia use less than 200 Litres of RON 95 fuel per month.
Previously, it was set at a limit of 300 litres per month and then it was slashed to the current 200 litres per month.
Based on Malaysia’s population of 34 million, that amounts to about 3,400,000 motorists that exceed the 200litres. In the grand scheme of things, it may seem as an unsignificant number. But bear in mind, these motorists probably happen to be in the SME landscape which is the backbone of the economy. These are the folks who travel places in all types of weather conditions, schedule meetings, prepare presentations, conduct coaching and training, meet customers, arrange stocks sent all over the country – the wheeling and dealing – and to be allocated only 200 litres??
This quota reduction truly impacts motorists who travel often and on long distances for work. More of than not, even before the month ends, every single ounce of fuel is used up. Extra ringgit being used at the pump when that could be saved is really what many Malaysians or rather the motoring world is looking for.
Until a mechanism that helps motorists who travel a lot is implemented, be sure your existing usage will far exceed the 200-litre threshold. It may seem as a reprieve that beginning July 1, for diesel vehicle motorists, diesel prices throughout Malaysia will be pegged at RM2.10 per litre for the first 200 litres. However, the drawback is that it is shared with your existing RON 95 quota.
Public dismay has been heard and seen on social media. The government has heeded the rakyat’s grouses and mentioned that owners of diesel-powered jeeps and pickup trucks can apply for an additional allocation of 100 litres of diesel, bringing their total entitlement to up to 300 litres per month, says Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali – Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister
He clarified that only the base quota is set at 200 litres for the Budi Madani Diesel (Budi Diesel) initiative.
