Daihatsu Scandal: What cars are affected in Malaysia?

In April this year, Daihatsu admitted wrongdoings of rigging safety test for 88,000 of their cars.

At the time, the cars that were affected included the 2023 Perodua Axia, Toyota Vios, Toyota Agya, and a yet-to-be-launched model.

On December 20, Daihatsu announced that they would suspend all vehicle shipments after an investigation found that 64 models under Daihatsu had undergone improper testing which is affecting three engines as well.

The independent panel report revealed that there were 174 new irregularities in 25 test items.

Affected car models include those sold under the Daihatsu brand and those supplied on an OEM basis to Toyota, Mazda and Subaru.

Both Perodua and Toyota have released a statement in Malaysia and Perodua has said that they are working with the Malaysian authorities to fix this matter.

Toyota has separately recalled 1 million vehicles in the US and their subsidiary Daihatsu may have falsified collision-safety test as far back as 1989.

The same report also revealed that Daihatsu’s offices were raided in Japan and shares of Toyota dropped as much as 5.6%, the lowest in 18 months, after the revelations.
