Third Gen Mazda CX5 CBU launched in Malaysia

Mazda CX5 launched and Automologist Atherton has the details

The much anticipated third generation of the Mazda CX5 has been just launched and it’s a CBU unit. Ever since it was launched in 2012, the first-generation Mazda CX-5 (codenamed KE) was Japan’s first SUV to revolutionize the segment.

Others before it looked rather boring, but Mazda, with its Kodo Design – which roughly translates to “Soul of Motion”, turned heads and cranked up the sales volume.

Almost four months after being previewed at this year’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), the third-generation (KM) Mazda CX-5 is now officially launched in Malaysia.

It is a fully imported CBU from the Land of the Rising Sun and retails at RM171,510.40 on-the-road without insurance, offered in a sole 2.5G High variant. Power is from a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine producing 185hp and 257Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

This third-generation CX-5 is larger than the older model where it measures 4,690 mm long (+115 mm), 1,860 mm wide (+15 mm) and 1,695 mm tall (+20 mm). Crucially, the wheelbase has grown to 2,815 mm (+115 mm), and gives one that roomy feeling as headroom is up by 29 mm.

This Mazda CX-5 is larger than the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and GWM Haval H6. Wanting one already?

When it comes to design, its bold look is accentuated by staggered daytime running lights and a front grille finished with new black trim. At the rear, the SUV retains its sporty look with exposed twin exhaust tailpipes. 19-inch alloy wheels are yours too.

Inside, the redesigned cabin features a cleaner dashboard layout, highlighted by a new 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen instead of the 15.6-inch unit offered in other markets.  (Really?? Gosh). It supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlayand plus a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Other additions include a 12-speaker Bose sound system, seven-colour ambient lighting and a 360-degree View Monitor with See-Through View functionality.

Jointly developed with Bose®, the Mazda CX-5’s audio system features 12 speakers for powerful, clearly defined sound. The unique Centerpoint surround system delivers a superbly focused, three-dimensional sonic image even from stereo sources, while AUDIOPILOT monitors ambient noise levels and automatically adjusts audio volume.

You also get dual-zone climate control with rear air-conditioning vents, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats with driver’s seat memory, a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat, sport tan leather upholstery, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a Qi wireless charging pad and ambient lighting.

Available in six exterior colours – Aero Gray, Navy Blue, Rhodium White, Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, and Jet Black, and it comes with a five-year manufacturer’s warranty and a five-year free maintenance programme, which includes all required maintenance, labour, parts and lubricants. Both the warranty and maintenance coverage are valid for five years or 100,000km, whichever comes first.
